General surgery is a discipline that not deals with surgical treatment of systemic and local conditions, but it has also affected numerous surgical and medical disciplines regarding general principles (wound healing, metabolic and endocrine response to injury etc.) and their development..

Types of surgery are usually named after the organ or its affiliated system. Endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures of goiter (thyroid gland), breast, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, anus, hernias, liver, gallbladder and bile duct are all covered by General Surgery.

Considering systems of body, General Surgery deals with goiter surgeries, breast surgeries as well as stomach, duodenum, small intestine, colon, rectum and anus surgeries, liver surgeries and hernia surgeries. In selected cases, General Surgery uses principles of preventive medicine to avoid unnecessary surgeries.

Due to wide range of services, General Surgery works in cooperation and coordination with many other disciplines. Most of General Surgery patients consist of various types of cancers. The department cooperates with Gastroenterology, Radiology / Interventional Radiology, Pathology, Medical and Radiation Oncology to plan diagnosis, operation and postoperative treatments of such patients.
